Caving in the Yorkshire Dales National Park

Kendal Mountaineering Services offers caving sessions very close to its base in the Lake District, Cumbria. The North Yorkshire Dales National Park, just 30 minutes drive from our location provides some challenging and varied caving with hundreds of miles of passages to explore.

A typical introductory caving session would be run close to Ribblehead in the 3 peaks area of the Yorkshire Dales National Park and will include visit to systems such as Long Churns or Browgill cave.

Having been on a beginners trip with us, or if you already having caving experience, you may want to do a more challenging trip. This could include short (up to 18m) descents and ascents to get you into less frequented and more extensive cave systems such as Kingsdale Master Cave or the Three Counties, Easegill System.

Once underground you'll go to places where relatively few people visit and see sights unlike anything on the sunlit surface. From huge passages draped with multi-coloured stalactites and flowstones to very small passages and thundering waterfalls plunging down vertical shafts; caving gives you the chance to experience a whole new world.

Cave Formation

You'll learn about how caves are formed dating from the carboniferous period of earth 300million years ago to the effects of the end of the last ice age and what has happened in more recent times.

With the help of our expert instructors and the odd leg up from your mates you can be sure of a highly enjoyable session. There are normally ways around the tight squeezes and apart from feet, getting wet is avoidable!

Caving can be done as part of a multi activity session in conjunction with a climbing session also available in the Yorkshire Dales National Park or as a full day out visiting several cave systems.
