About Kendal Mountaineering Services

Iain Gallagher founder of Kendal Mountaineering ServicesKendal Mountaineering Services is run by Iain Gallagher (seen here in the picture). Iain was fortunate to be born and brought up in the Lake District by parents who were very keen on the outdoors and who ran a Youth Hostel in the shadow of Helvellyn, and then one of the first Outdoor Education Centres for Cumbria Education Authority.

Childhood holidays were spent in areas such as the Cairngorms National Park, The Isle of Skye, The Outer Hebrides, amongst other remote and beautiful places. Iain subsequently started exploring the Lake District Fells in his own back yard at the age of six, eventually completed the Wainwrights and whilst Munro bagging discovered mountaineering in the Alps.

Climbing Experience

Iain has since gone on to climb many Alpine peaks and has also climbed in the mountains of Central Spain, North America, Nepal and the Moroccan Atlas. Most recently he was in South America, climbing Aconcagua in Argentina.

In the UK, Iain divides his time between hills and crags mainly in the Lake District but also in North Wales. Winter means Scotland, on a climb in the Cairngorms or Ben Nevis and caving in North Yorkshire is good all year round.

Having worked in this industry since 1992, he considers himself lucky to be able to make a living doing something he really enjoys and finds inspirational. You’ll find this inspiration and enthusiasm passed on to you in every outdoor activity course that Iain delivers; set against a background of considerable experience.

Outdoor Skills & Qualifications

Iain holds a Batchelor of Education Honours Degree and the following qualifications:

Mountaineering Instructors Award and Winter Mountain Walking Leader Award, NCA Level Two Cave Leader Award, BCU Level Two Kayak and Level Three Open Canoe Awards.

For 22 years Iain was a member of a Lake District Mountain Rescue Team and is a member of the Association of Mountaineering Instructors.

The Team

Iain works with a small team of hand picked instructors who all share his enthusiasm for working in the outdoors. He believes in providing unforgettable experiences where you are able to discover and develop your abilities and achieve more than you thought possible - learning new skills and things about yourself that you didn't know whilst having fun and staying safe.

Iain hopes that you enjoy looking at the Kendal Mountaineering Services website and browsing the many activities he offers. Have a look at the picture galleries showing pictures of clients on past courses to give you an idea of what we do and where we work. We can create tailor made outdoor courses for everyone from individual clients to large groups of people. You can choose to come and have a fun day out, learn some skills on one of our training courses or be guided up that classic rock climb you have heard about. You can read about everything that Iain’s been doing with, or without clients, on our blog.

We look forward to hearing from you.
